Antelope Valley, NV

Merry Christmas! With Chickadee essentially closed to motor, we decided to check out the Antelope Valley end of Moon Rocks today. We had not used that as a staging area before.  Turning Right off the dirt road would have taken us to trails we had already ridden (from Moomrocks) so, we turned left and follow that along a dirt road. There was just a tad bit of snow on the roads and trails, not enough to make a difference until we got to one spot with a tight turn and uphill- I couldn't make.  So we turned around, and follow the dirt road again to the top of a hill for a better view of our options.  We found a fun single track we followed for a while until we lost it in the snow at a creek crossing and dirt road intersection. Time was an issue so, we headed back to the trucks.  We will definitely go check out the area again. I'm sure there is much more single track to discover.  The best part of the whole ride with it was not whooped out!

Burlington Ridge

Dirt, water, mud, single track... Conditions were awesome for some super fun single tract riding with friends. So much so, we actually drove down twice in a week to the Chalk Bluff/Burlington Ridge OHV off Hwy 20. This area is known for its tight, curvy single tract with well maintained trails. From what I've heard, a group out of Grass Valley/Nevada City work with the USFS to clear the trails in the spring and maintain throughout the summer/fall until the trails close mid December. I'm told there is a great view and lunch spot with a bench. If you find it, let me know! I'd love to check it out.

Moonrocks - Fast flowy Ride

Perfect fall day for a ride down at Moonrocks.  Mark took us on a super fun, fast and flowie ride.  We started at the staging area just on the left side of Winnemucca Ranch Rd. a little after the pavement ends.  We rode single track past the "true Moonrocks" and camping area, then followed some two track and single track up to the fence line and rode that single track for a while.  We meandered up and down a super fun squiggley creek bed and canyon.  Then back down down to the truck.

Saghen Hills Scouting...

This area used to be tons of fun, overgrown jeep roads turned single track. A few years ago,, the USFS hired a contractor to masticate the unruly brush and clear out many of the tight trees. What was left behind is a nice forest, sans single track. The 4x4's have found many of the roads not closed off after the loggers left and the "stick people" (My term for the ones who throw a bunch limbs and brush at the entrance to their single track in a failed attempt to hide it). That in its self is a story for another day. Our mission (two tracks in this post) was to find some moto friendly single track in Sagehen Hills area. We figured with most of the leaves down for winter, we may have an easier time finding a fun route off the beaten path. Instead, we rode in circles.  Hahaha

Martis To Kings Beach

Kings Beach has a small yet really nice semi technical single track trail system.  Over the past two summers parts have been closed for clean up by the USFS.  This year all the trails were open. We start on the road that goes up to Martis Lookout (well worth the xtra few minutes to go check out the fantastic views and say "hi" to the friendly lookout staff). From the pavement, it starts on a dirt road until you get to the single track, really nice downhill to Kings Beach with only one or two tougher "go around" spots from downed trees.  Once at the bottom,  we go left and have to traverse the creek.  Unfortunately, the bridge has been washed out for years, for me, its a hike-a-bike to get across.  With two people, it's not to bad and well worth it! The other option (with a plate) is to turn right at the bottom of the hill and go through Kings Beach to the staging area.  Not as much fun.

Mt Hough OHV Road Trip

With all the snow last winter, the Sierras are still thawing out.  Although fairly warm, there is lots of snow left around our local trails.  A road trip to is the answer today. A fairly new trail system, nestled above Quincy, CA is the Mt Hough OHV.  From the reviews (mostly Mtn Bike) the trails sound fun and semi-popular.  All the reviews gave a heads up that the area is actually a motor vehicle trail system and to be on the lookout for motorcycles.  None were negative, condescending or snide, which was really nice to read and made me want to go check it out. Plenty of parking and a few different "staging areas" spots along the dirt road heading up to the top.  We picked a place, unloaded and took off.  Almost immediately, we ran into two fellow dirt bikes.  Both locals, knowledgable of the area.
